Service Description

Woodworking Level 2. Our Intro to Woodworking: Cutting Board class is a requirement for this class. You will already know the shop, the safety rules, and the core tools, so we move faster and go further here. A cutting board is one flat panel. A box is six pieces that all have to fit each other, and that changes the work completely. The corners have to close, the lid has to sit right, and a joint that is off shows from across the room. This is where woodworking stops being about cutting parts and starts being about making parts agree. Over two evenings you will build a hardwood box with cut box joints at all four corners and a fitted lid, and take it home finished. Class Dates: Day 1: Tuesday, September 22, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM Day 2: Tuesday, September 29, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM Day 1: Cutting parts, cutting joints, and glue up. You will square up your stock so all four walls match, lay out your joints, and cut box joints on the table saw using a box joint jig. We will cover why interlocking end grain makes one of the strongest corners in woodworking, and how to arrange your boards so the grain runs continuously around the box. You will dry fit, check the assembly for square, and glue up. Clamping a box without pulling it out of square is a skill of its own and you will learn it here. Your box cures before the next session. Day 2: The lid, the fit, and the finish. You will build and fit the lid, either a sliding lid or one on hinges. The fitting is the real work of the night, and it is the part that separates a box that closes from a box that just shuts. We will sand the assembled box, soften the edges, and add engraving if you bought that upgrade. We finish by applying a finish that brings out the grain and protects the wood. What You'll Learn: Cutting and squaring parts so all four walls match Laying out and cutting box joints on the table saw with a jig Why interlocking end grain makes a strong corner Arranging grain so it wraps continuously around the corners Dry fitting and checking an assembly for square Clamping a box without racking it out of square Building and fitting a sliding or hinged lid Working to tighter tolerances than flat work allows Sanding and shaping a small assembled piece Optional engraving and personalization What's Included: All hardwood, hardware, and project materials Use of tools, jigs, and equipment Finishing materials Hands-on instruction both evenings A finished box to take home Our Intro to Woodworking: Cutting Board class is required before taking this class.
